MOO dreams up new tools that help people turn their virtual content into beautiful print products. We were lucky enough to meet the team, enjoy the video...
Thursday the 10th July marked an important and exciting date for Screenedit, as it was the launch of their very first usergroup, Screenedit Sessions. The event was hosted at the Birkbeck Cinema in Euston, which proved to be the perfect venue for the intimate affair. The exterior of the recently refurbished building, offers no clues as to what can be found inside - a vibrant multicoloured ensemble of angled rooms and corridors, and a luxury 70-seater cinema.
Screenedit had an overwhelming response to the event which meant they had to close registration early but also meant the cinema was happily full. The ‘Xbox Lounge’ was buzzing from the word go, and a great place to grab a free beer and catch up with some familiar faces from the interactive scene including Jon Davey, who kindly raffled a ticket for ‘Flash on the Beach 2008’.
It was great to hear two influential design agencies speaking about their recent experiences and the All of Us team kicked off the night with some exciting projects.
After a short break and some more (very welcome) free beer, Brendan Dawes rounded off the evening with another of his amazingly inspiring showcases. He included both personal and professional projects whilst constantly promoting the philosophy ‘just do it (whatever you love to do), and get it out there – you never know what will happen’.
A great example of how this philosophy works is his personal project, Cinema Redux. Brendan explained how, for fun, he wanted to reduce a whole film down to one single image by capturing a frame every second throughout the film and displaying this as an 8x6 pixel image in rows of 60. Unexpected and intriguing information began to appear within the images. Check out the result on his website www.brendandawes.com.
Soon after Brendan ‘got his work out there’ via his website, he was contacted by MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and invited to show his piece in the exhibition ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’. After promptly accepting the invitation, he was then asked if he could send them an 18 foot high file of his work – and he hopped on a plane to New York to view his work, in all its 18 foot glory, with thousands of other exhibition go-ers. Pretty good going for someone who got an E in art at school!
Brendan kindly shared with us one of the starting points to his career which was a website design for 18-30’s Holidays. It was a great example of how, you do, you learn, and then you (hopefully) do better. Well Brendan did, and his next design www.saulbass.tv exemplifies how he learnt to consider the people who would be visiting the site, or, the user experience.
Ten years later and he is now Creative Director for the Manchester based design agency magneticNorth, as well as being an author, public speaker, artist and non-stop experimenter! All of Brendan Dawes’ projects can either be found on the magneticNorth website, or www.brandandawes.com, and its well worth having a look – it’s definitely an experience! Also check out www.makeamixa.com, and Brendan recommends www.photojojo.com for a fun way to enjoy your old photographs.
The evening came to a close with the raffling of a Wacom tablet, Flash on the Beach 2008 ticket, and an Xbox360. Oh, and of course a few more beers! And thanks to Ben and Tricky from Tricky Business, who hosted the event, it was a fantastic evening.
